Students, of whatever age or ability, are welcome by musicdevon’s teachers. We aim to make music lessons fun, interactive and musically meaningful. Using a variety of teaching and learning styles, and exploring all genres, we want our students to be pro-active in their music making, and to develop as whole musicians by exploring all the strands of technical skills and development, listening and appraising, composing and improvisation – and performing.

Lessons are fun! We are committed to supporting students to enjoy learning and practicing music, as well as exploring formal and informal opportunities through their music.

If a student wishes to take grade exams our teachers are able to prepare students across a whole range of available examination

Musicdevon offers a bank of experience peripatetic teachers who hold a current enhanced DBS certificate and are all practising professionals in their field. Our teachers are all passionate about music and equally passionate about their teaching and the future of musical opportunity for young people in Devon. They include professional performers, band leaders, conductors and composers. Our QTS teachers, can deliver whole class music teaching, plus curriculum support. Those with specific areas of expertise, such as ensemble leadership, SEN experience, or early years provision, can bring a wider range of teaching expertise to your school. By working in partnership with other organisations, Our teachers can also help deliver your extra-curricular needs and meet those of the whole community. Demonstrations and road shows as well as regular pupil-led performances can raise the awareness of music in your school. All our teachers offer first class instrumental music tuition, without these skills there will be no musicians for our orchestras, jazz ensembles or rock bands. The benefits of music making to all areas of childrens’ learning and well being are so well catalogued that they no longer need defending.

Music does matter, and helping to make music happen in Devon schools matters very much to us at musicdevon.

Teaching young people to play an instrument or make music together is a rewarding profession. Whether you come from a teaching or performing background the opportunity to pass on your knowledge and experience provides great job satisfaction.

Most of our teachers work part time, fitting their teaching around other commitments and visiting one or many schools.

By becoming a member of musicdevon co-operative not only are you helping to maintain standards and professionalism in music education, you are keeping music making alive in Devon, supporting fellow teachers, schools and students. You will be part of ensuring that all those who want to learn to make and enjoy music have a chance to learn the musical skills necessary to play an instrument and fulfil their musical and personal potential.

• Do I have to be a qualified teacher?

musicdevon teachers are expected to be able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism as well as instrumental skills and to hold a current enhanced DBS certificate. Teachers without QTS will be considered. Having the knowledge, skills and experience to be excellent, professional and holistic practitioners are the key elements to being a member of musicdevon. References will be sought and all teachers will be considered on their individual merits.

• How will I be paid?

musicdevon pays teachers directly based on hours taught. Our fees to students are made at a standard rate, a small percentage of which is deducted by musicdevon for administration. Administrative costs are kept to a minimum for the benefit of all members.
